- AIDS (an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a deadly condition that threatens millions of individuals worldwide. AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV. The virus is mainly spread by unprotected sex or sharing needles with an HIV-infected person. Babies born to HIV-infected women or breastfed by such women may become infected.
- There is no cure for AIDS at this time. Recent medical breakthroughs have succeeded in controlling the virus once a person is infected, but they have not proven to rid the body of the virus. Anti-retroviral treatment for infected pregnant women has also been developed and can, if appropriately initiated, often prevent transmission of the virus to babies.
- Work is being done on the development of an HIV vaccine the best hope for preventing the transmission of HIV.
